Filter media is the material in your filter that water passes through. There are three kind of filter media: mechanical, biological, and chemical, using the right filter media is important to the health of your aquarium.
- Mechanical - Physically traps and removes debris and particles like fish waste, sludge, uneaten food, and dust from the water. It is strained from the water column as it passes through the filter media, keeping the water clean and clear of floating particles. Mechanical filter media comes in a variety of grades to trap various size particles, it also helps biological filtration by preventing the biological filter media from clogging.
- Biological - Any inert material used to develop beneficial bacteria used in the nitrogen cycle. Water passes through the filter media, organic waste is brought to the bacteria so they can break it down into less harmful components.
- Chemical - Involves removing the dissolved wastes and pollutants through chemical reaction. Chemical filter media can help remove any pollutants mechanical or biological missed.
