A protein skimmer is a filter used to remove organic waste from the water before they break down into toxic chemicals. A protein skimmer is an important piece of hardware you can use to maintain better water quality, which is beneficial to your aquatic life and may reduce the amount of water changes.

Water is sent through a chamber where many air bubbles are pushed through it, the air bubbles create a foam (this is the 'skimming' process) which is discarded into a collection cup.
